Join us for an immersive evening of sound, silence and stillness, as leading young Dhrupad vocalist Dhani Gundecha and Pakhawaj artist Shri Dnyaneshwar Deshmukh present the profound and meditative tradition of Dhrupad at Sayuri, Bali.

About Dhrupad

Dhrupad is one of the oldest surviving forms of Indian classical music. Its origins are deeply connected with the ancient traditions of sacred sound and devotional singing in India, before it evolved over centuries into a highly refined classical art form performed in temples and royal courts.

At the heart of Dhrupad is Nada — the experience of sound itself.

Rather than rushing towards a musical climax, Dhrupad unfolds slowly and organically. Through the gradual exploration of a raga, each note is given space to breathe, resonate and reveal its character.

The expansive alap, with its unhurried movement and rich vocal resonance, creates an atmosphere of deep listening and contemplation.

The voice is central to this experience. Dhrupad develops a powerful relationship between breath, vibration, resonance and awareness, making the music as much an inward journey as a musical performance.

The evening will be led by Dhani Gundecha, one of India’s leading young exponents of Dhrupad.

Dhani is a disciple of the renowned Gundecha Brothers — Padma Shri Pt. Umakant Gundecha and the late Pt. Ramakant Gundecha, among the most celebrated Dhrupad musicians of their generation.

Dhani continues this musical lineage through her own practice and interpretation, carrying forward its depth while engaging with contemporary audiences.

Shri Dnyaneshwar Deshmukh — Pakhawaj

She will be accompanied by Shri Dnyaneshwar Deshmukh on the Pakhawaj, the traditional barrel-shaped percussion instrument of Dhrupad.

The Pakhawaj provides the rhythmic foundation of the music, creating a powerful dialogue with the expansive voice and bringing the performance into its rhythmic and energetic dimensions.
